Liz Cambage Set WNBA Record With 53 Points

ARLINGTON, TX Liz Cambage broke a WNBA record with 53 points on 17-for-22 from the field to lead the Wings to a 104-87 victory over the New York Liberty to improve to 13-9 on the season, including 8-3 at home.

Cambage scored 11 of the first 13 points for the Wings to give them a 13-6 midway through the opening quarter. The Wings then used a 10-2 run to extend their lead over the Liberty and take a 25-14 lead after the first period.

Cambage continued to dominate for the Wings, scoring 15 points in the second quarter to give the Wings a 57-44 lead heading into the locker room. Her 28 first-half points are the most she has ever scored in a single half in her career. She also grabbed six rebounds in the opening half. Allisha Gray scored eight points, while Kayla Thornton added seven points in the first half.

The Liberty stormed back in the third quarter, using a 23-7 lead to take their first lead of the game. Wings Head Coach Fred Williams was ejected from the game after receiving two technical fouls in the third quarter. But the Wings fought back to take a 74-73 lead heading into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, Cambage scored 20 points to help the Wings pull away from the Liberty and grab a 104-87 victory. Her 53 total points set a WNBA record for most points in a single game, while her 17 made field goals also set a WNBA record for most made field goals in a single game. She also recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 10 rebounds, while adding five blocks.

Glory Johnson recorded 13 points and seven rebounds, while Allisha Gray scored 13 points and added six assists. Kayla Thornton also scored in double figures with 10 points and six assists. Skylar Diggins-Smith scored nine points and added a game-high seven assists. The Wings scored 100+ points for the fifth time this season, extending the franchise record.

The Liberty were led off the bench by Kia Nurse, who recorded 25 points on 7-for-11 from the field.

The Wings finish their two-game stretch against the Washington Mystics on July 17. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN2.
