Cowboys Use Franchise Tag to Keep Pickens in Dallas After Breakout Season

FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys made their first significant move of the offseason by placing the franchise tag on wide receiver George Pickens, ensuring the playmaker remains in Dallas through at least the 2026 season.

The decision follows a career-defining 2025 campaign in which Pickens emerged as one of the league’s most dangerous receiving threats. Appearing in all 17 games, he totaled 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns. His 15.4 yards per catch highlighted his vertical impact, as he consistently stretched defenses and delivered momentum-shifting plays.

For a Cowboys offense that thrived on explosiveness last season, Pickens quickly became more than just a complementary piece. He developed into a true No. 1 option, forcing opposing defenses to adjust coverage schemes weekly. His ability to win downfield and in contested situations added another dimension to an attack that leaned heavily on chunk plays.

The franchise tag — a fully guaranteed, one-year tender reserved for top performers at their position — prevents Pickens from testing free agency when the market opens. It also gives Dallas time to negotiate a long-term extension without the pressure of an expiring contract.

From a front-office perspective, the move preserves continuity while maintaining flexibility under the salary cap. For Pickens, it secures elite-level compensation for 2026, while keeping the door open for a more permanent deal.

Contract talks are expected to continue in the coming months, but one thing is clear: the Cowboys are not ready to let their rising star walk.
