ARLINGTON, TEXAS — The Dallas Cowboys lost back-to-back games for the first time this season, following a 27-17 defeat to the Arizona Cardinals.
While Dallas scored at least 40 points in its first three home games this season, the Cardinals handed quarterback Dak Prescott his second career loss playing on a Monday night.
The Cowboys did not score on their opening drive, while the Cardinals kicked a field goal for the game’s first points.
The first touchdown of the evening went to Arizona’s Marvin Harrison Jr. Soon after, Dallas scored on too: Defensive end Sam Williams blocked Pat O’Donnell’s punt—Williams’ second career blocked punt—and fellow DE Marshawn Kneeland recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown, with about four minutes to go before the half. The last time the Cowboys blocked a punt and recovered it for a TD was back in nearly four years ago.
Arizona’s current starting quarterback, Jacoby Brissett, punched in a 1-yard TD, next.
While an NFL record 68-yard field goal was made just a day beforehand, Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey tried tying it just a day later, but missed it just wide left—Cowboys trailing the Cardinals 17-7 heading into the half.
Then just three plays out of the half, Arizona’s tight end Trey McBride scored a touchdown. Dallas made it 24-10 on the next drive, thanks to a 26-yard field goal from Aubrey.
The Cardinals would score another FG before wide receiver Ryan Flournoy would catch a 5-yard lob from Prescott. With Aubrey’s point-after-touchdown, it brought the Cowboys within 10 of the Cardinals with just over 10 minutes left to play.
But it wouldn’t be enough for the Cowboys to hand the Cardinals their sixth-straight loss. Instead, it was Dallas losing its second-straight.
Both head coach Brian Schottenheimer and Prescott used the word “inconsistent” to describe the team’s play over the first half of the season.
Now on a BYE week, and the trade deadline looming with less than a day’s time to go after the night’s game, the Cowboys will have to reset in time for their last eight games of the regular season.
