FRISCO, TX — The Dallas Cowboys have officially set their 53-man roster, finalizing key position decisions and making a few surprising moves ahead of Week 1.
Joe Milton will serve as the backup to quarterback Dak Prescott, earning the QB2 role after a solid showing through camp. The team released veteran Will Grier, signaling a shift toward Milton’s long-term potential.
One of the more unexpected moves came in the running back room, where Deuce Vaughn was among those waived. The fan-favorite and 2023 sixth-round pick showed flashes during his rookie season but was edged out by a crowded group. The Cowboys will move forward with Javontae Williams, Miles Sanders, rookies Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah, and fullback Hunter Luepke.
On the defensive side, former first-round pick Mazi Smith made the roster despite an uneven offseason. While consistency remains a concern, the Cowboys are keeping faith in his upside.
Perrion Winfrey also made the final 53, earning a spot after entering camp on the bubble. His strong effort in practices and preseason games solidified his value as a rotational defensive tackle.
Though this is the initial 53, expect movement in the coming days. Dallas is expected to stay active on the waiver wire, using it as an opportunity to bolster depth and improve roster flexibility.
Keep it here for continuing Cowboys coverage as the regular season approaches.
