ARLINGTON, TEXAS — The Texas Rangers went the high school route in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft, selecting shortstop Gavin Fien from Great Oak High School in California with the 12th overall pick.
Fien, an 18-year-old Texas Longhorns commit, hit .358 with five homers and 16 RBIs this spring. Known for his smooth fielding and disciplined approach at the plate, Fien walked more times than he struck out during his senior season.
He also starred for Team USA’s 18U National Team last summer, hitting .400 while helping capture a gold medal at the WBSC Americas Qualifier.
Fien becomes the highest draft pick in Great Oak history and follows his brother Dylan, who was selected by Oakland in last year’s draft. This marks the first time since 2018 that Texas opened its draft with a high school player.
The Rangers will make two more picks before Day 1 of the draft wraps up.
