DALLAS – The Dallas Stars have come to terms with captain Jamie Benn on a one-year contract extension with a $1 million dollar base salary and performance incentives where Benn can earn $3 million in bonuses. The deal does not come as a shock. Both Benn and Stars GM Jim Nill have made it a known fact that the Dallas Stars organization is home for the 35-year-old.
“Jamie embodies everything it means to be a Dallas Star, and has since he was drafted 18 years ago,” said Nill. “There was never a doubt that Jamie would return next season, and we are thrilled for both our organization and our fans that he will continue to lead our team in our pursuit of winning a championship.”
The deal comes as a friendly cap space move. The performance bonus factor would be added to the team’s cap after the season is over. Dallas now has less than $1 Million in space days before free agency opens on July 1.
Here is the structure:
● $500,000 each for 20, 30, 50, and 60 games played.
● $500,000 for a Western Conference Final win
● $500,000 for a Stanley Cup win
The 2025-26 season will be Jamie Benn’s 17th season as a Dallas Stars. And he’s seen a lot with this organization over the years – seven head coaches to be exact – and he’s about to possibly embrace his eighth.
Speaking of the Stars head coaching search. Word on the street is Glen Gulutzan who previously was the head coach of the Stars in 2012-13, and Texas Stars AHL head coach Nei Graham have both been interviewed but a decision has not yet been made
We’ll get back to the search soon, but the Stars have some decisions to make as the NHL Draft has arrived and free agency is just days away.
Could there be a big trade coming? Who will the Stars be drafting in 2025? What about the unrestricted free agents and what about the cap space?
All questions that will likely be addressed in the coming days.
