CHICAGO — The Texas Rangers finally found a way to halt their losing streak, piecing together a dramatic three-run surge in the ninth inning to edge the Chicago White Sox 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Heading into the final frame trailing by two, Texas looked destined to drop its seventh game in a row. But a hit-by-pitch, a timely extra-base hit, and a costly defensive miscue cracked the door open—and the Rangers barged through. Josh Jung took a fastball off the arm to lead off the inning, and after a well-struck double by Jake Burger, Texas had the tying run in scoring position with no outs.
The momentum briefly stalled after Alejandro Osuna went down on strikes, but a grounder from Kyle Higashioka was mishandled at first base, allowing Jung to cross the plate and level the score. Adolis García then delivered the decisive blow, splitting the gap in left-center with a two-run double that flipped the game on its head.
Chicago made things interesting in the home half of the ninth. Michael A. Taylor laced an RBI double to cut the deficit to one, but reliever Robert Garcia regrouped and caught Taylor leaning too far off second for a crucial pickoff. Vinny Capra then lifted a deep fly ball to left that stayed in the park, sealing the Rangers’ much-needed victory.
Texas had been on a rough stretch, losing seven of their last eight, but found just enough late-inning magic to escape with the win. Shawn Armstrong earned the win in relief, while Garcia battled through a tense ninth to secure his second save of the season. For the White Sox, Jordan Leasure was tagged with the loss after failing to protect the lead in the ninth.
The two clubs will wrap up their series Monday, with both teams looking for momentum as they head into the heart of the season.
