Xavier Woods Will Miss Some Time With Hamstring Injury

FRISCO, Texas – At the press conference today kicking off training camp week at the Cowboys’ headquarters in Frisco, head coach, Jason Garrett, addressed Xavier Wood’s hamstring injury. Woods left the week 2 preseason game against the Bengals with an injury to the same hamstring he had issues with during his rookie season in 2017.

Garrett stated, “ He pulled his hamstring. It is significant enough for him to miss some time.”

The Cowboys are thinner at the safety position and now will have to do some re-evaluating “looking at all possible guys to address the issue. “

However, Garrett made it clear that Byron Jones will be staying at the cornerback position. Jones has transitioned well and had an incredible training camp in Oxnard with several interceptions and his ability paired against Michael Gallup on man-to-man press coverage. The Cowboys acquired several versatile players in the secondary during free agency including S Marqueston Huff, S Tyree Robinson, CB Donovan Olumba, CB Kam Kelly, and CB Charvarius Ward. Some of these guys may be moved around to accommodate the loss of Woods at safety.

The secondary has struggled with holding penalties in the first two preseason games, but Chidobe Awuzie’s one-handed interception in the Bengals matchup, shifted the momentum in the defensive backfield. Today at practice, defensive back’s coach, Kris Richard got the boys energy level up by throwing some passes and getting involved in their defensive game plan.
