Pearl Jam, REM join coalition

Pearl_Jam_Band_PhotoA coalition of pop musicians is outraged that their music was used by the American military as an interrogation device at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. Outraged by the interrogators and security agencies”’ practice of using their music and others’ at ear-bleeding levels to intimidate detainees, a slew of top musicians have endorsed a Freedom of Information Act request to learn which songs were used to induce uncooperative terror suspects to talk, as part of controversial interrogation methods at the detention facility at Guantanamo. According to The Associated Pres, the high-profile coalition of top musicians including R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, Rosanne Cash, Steve Earle and Billy Bragg announced their support for the National Campaign to Close Guantanamo. As part of their effort, the National Security Archive- a Washington-based independent research institute- filed a Freedom of Information Act request, seeking the declassification of all records related to the use of loud music in interrogation practices.
