Janet Jackson looked visibly moved after performing her tribute to her brother Michael at the MTV Video Music Award. She performed with the video to their duet “Scream” as part of the opening number. After her performance she pointed to heaven and took a bow. She was backed up by dancers dressed in different Michael Jackson costumes: his red jacket, military uniform, white shirt over white tank, and a suit with an armband. Madonna gave a speech in Michael’s honor, talking about how they had similar backgrounds but she had a childhood and he didn’t. She says the first time she took him out to dinner, she tried to get him to eat French fries, drink wine, have dessert and say bad words; all things he wouldn’t normally do. When they were watching a movie at her house later that night, she says he held her hand, because he was looking for a friend. The trailer to “This Is It,” the documentary based on Jackson’s rehearsal footage, premiered at the end of the show.
